Wharf Named Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Oct. 27, 2009
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.- Commissioner Larry Scott announced today that redshirt senior goalkeeper Devon Wharf of ARIZONA has been named Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week for Oct. 20-26.
Wharf, who hails from Mission, British Columbia, Can., was a stalwart in goal for the Wildcats against in-state rival Arizona State, allowing only one goal en route to a double overtime 2-1 victory for the Cats. In a truly impressive performance, Wharf tallied seven saves in the match, four coming in the second half to help carry Arizona into the overtime period. She then made a key save in the first overtime period to continue the game, allowing teammate Alex Smith to put away the game-winning goal in the 106th minute of the match.
The win marks Arizona soccer's second straight victory over Arizona State, and the first win ever in Tuscon against their rivals.
Wharf has overcome injuries in her career to become Arizona's starting goalkeeper this season, appearing in 15 matches and making 50 saves along the way, good for second in the Conference.
This is Wharf's first Player of the Week selection and Arizona's 10th selection all-time.
Also nominated: Lisa Kevorkian, CAL; Red Nixon, OSU; Kelley O'Hara, STAN; Lauren Cheney, UCLA; Marihelen Tomer, USC; McKenna Waitley, WASH; Kiersten Dallstream, WSU.
