Cross Country to Send Nine to Pac-10 Championships

Oct. 28, 2009

Corvallis, Ore. The Oregon State cross country team will send nine runners to the 2009 Pac-10 Championships, hosted by USC, at Sky Links Country Club in Long Beach, Calif., on Friday, Oct. 30. The 6,000-meter women’s race is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.

The course consists of three 2,000-meter loops over relatively flat grass terrain with short sections across cart paths. The weather is expected to be sunny in the low 70s.

“We are all very excited for this entire group of women, and this will definitely be one of the youngest groups to compete there in a long time,” head coach Kelly Sullivan said. “The conference’s depth is better than it has been since we started the program with all 10 programs going in, doing so with a lot of high expectations.”

Oregon State will compete against four top 20 teams in No. 1 Washington, No. 8 Oregon, No. 12 Stanford and No. 17 Arizona. Eight Pac-10 teams are ranked in the West Regional Top 15 with conference schools holding down the top six spots.

The group is led by juniors Abby Chesimet (Astoria, Ore.), Jennifer Macias (Hermiston, Ore.) and Hannah Soza-Hodgkinson (Forest Ranch, Calif.), who all have Pac-10 experience.

“I know the women are excited to go,” Sullivan said. “We have great leadership from Jen Macias, Abby Chesimet and Hannah. They lead by example every day, and I know they’re excited for this to be ‘their team.’”

Competing for the first time at the Pac-10 Championships will be sophomore Laura Carlyle (Kelowna, British Columbia) and redshirt freshman Natosha Buruse (Ridgefield, Wash.) and Olivia Poblacion (Portland, Ore.) and freshmen Sabrina Lopez (Los Angeles, Calif.), Sandra Martinez (Yakima, Wash.) and Ashley Mayfield (Seaside, Ore.).

Lopez and Mayfield both competed last weekend at the OSU Beaver Classic unattached, finishing fifth and sixth, respectively.

Last season, the Beavers posted their best finish since the program was reinstated in 2004, coming in sixth at the Springfield Country Club in Springfield, Ore. Junior Casey Masterson (Eugene, Ore.) had the top finish for Oregon State, coming in 28th in 21:02.01.
