WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - STANFORD was the unanimous pick to win the Pac-10 in 2010 after a polling of women's basketball media members who cover the Pacific-10 Conference. The Cardinal, who made its second-straight NCAA Final Four appearance last season, collected all 21 first-place votes for 210 total points. The media members also selected a five-player Preseason All-Pac-10 squad which featured Cardinal senior Jayne Appel and California senior Alexis Gray-Lawson, both were unanimous selections.

The media were in agreement with the Pac-10 coaches, who also selected Stanford as the favorite to win the league in the 2009 Pac-10 Coaches Poll released last week. The Cardinal won its third-straight Pac-10 Tournament title last year and went 33-5 en route to the national semifinals.

Led by 14th-year head coach Charli Turner Thorne, her 2009 ARIZONA STATE Sun Devils were picked second in the preseason poll, garnering 175 points. CALIFORNIA was not far behind with 170 points and UCLA was fourth in the polling with 158 points. With 124 points, USC rounded out the top-five.

Pacing the next five were OREGON STATE with 84 points for sixth place, WASHINGTON STATE in seventh with 81 points and OREGON placed eighth with 64 points. ARIZONA (57) and WASHINGTON (32) followed in ninth and 10th place, respectively.

Headlining the five-member Preseason All-Pac-10 team are unanimous selections Appel (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) and Gray-Lawson (Oakland, Calif.), who were both first team all-conference picks at the conclusion of the 2009-10 season. Appel was also voted the 2009 Pac-10 Player of the Year. Completing the all-star squad are a trio of juniors in UCLA's Doreena Campbell (Alexandria, Va.) and Arizona's Ify Ibekwe (Carson, Calif.), Stanford's Jeanette Pohlen (Brea, Calif.). Ibekwe was a first team all-conference honoree last year, while Pohlen and Campbell were second team picks.

The 2009-10 regular season tips-off Friday, Nov. 13 and the first Pac-10 Conference games is slated for Friday, January 1. The ninth-annual State Farm Pac-10 Women's Basketball Tournament takes place March 11-14 at Galen Center on the campus of USC in Los Angeles.
