STANFORD, Calif. - Days after being tabbed as the favorite to win the 2009-10 Pac-10 regular season title by the 10 head coaches, the Stanford women's basketball team has been unanimously selected to perform the feat by the media who cover the Pac-10.

Additionally, senior center Jayne Appel and junior guard Jeanette Pohlen were selected to the Preseason All-Pac-10 Team.

The Cardinal received all 21 first-place votes in the balloting for a total of 210 points. Arizona State was next with 175 points while California was third with 170 points. UCLA (158 points) and USC (124) rounded out the top half of the conference predictions.

Head coach Tara VanDerveer opens her 24th campaign at the Stanford, owning a record of 605-142 at the Cardinal helm. Entering 2009-10 VanDerveer has guided Stanford into position as an early favorite for the 2010 national title, to be contested at the Final Four in the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Stanford is coming off of a 2008-09 season in which it reached the Final Four for the second straight year, posting an overall record of 33-5 and topping the Pac-10 with a 17-1 conference mark.

The Cardinal returns 13 players from last year's team, including four starters, led by Appel, a 2009 State Farm Coaches' All-American and the reigning Pac-10 Player of the Year. Entering her senior season, Appel, one of two unanimous picks for the Preseason All-Pac-10 Team, heads a talented group of returners that includes Pohlen, a 2009 All-Pac-10 Second Team selection, and 2009 third-team pick forward Kayla Pedersen.

Also returning will be Pac-10 All-Defensive Team honorable mention guard Rosalyn Gold-Onwude and All-Freshman Team pick forward Nnemkadi Ogwumike. Redshirt junior JJ Hones makes her return to the court after having her 2008-09 season cut short due to a torn left ACL suffered last fall.

Stanford will open its two-game exhibition slate this Sunday, Nov. 1 against Vanguard at 2 p.m. and finish up Sunday, Nov. 8 against UC San Diego at 2 p.m.

The Cardinal will open the 2009-10 regular season on the road at Old Dominion Friday, Nov. 13 at 4 p.m. PT.

Stanford will open the defense of last season's Pac-10 title on Saturday, Jan. 2 as conference play gets underway with the California Golden Bears visiting Maples Pavilion for a 12 p.m. contest that will be televised on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area.
