Pac-10 Men's Basketball Media Day: California

Oct. 29, 2009

California Head Coach Mike Montgomery

Opening Statement
“It’s nice to be here. There is a little optimism around with a lot of players returning. Practices aren’t what I wish they were, but we are trying to get better from last year. We have four perimeter players who can shoot the ball. We need to be physical and a better defensive team. It’s nice to return three players who can score 30 points on any given night. My goal is to be consistently an upper half team and a high seed in the NCAA Tournament. It’s not easy. I have a greater respect for recruiting than ever before. Our schedule is really difficult, but we deserve to play against the best. Personnel-wise, we miss Jordan Wilkes (graduated); We need Harper Kamp to get back from a knee injury. He is making daily progress and we need him back because he is a smart player. Expectations are there.”

Compare Jerome Randle to Brevin Knight.
“It’s unfair to compare Jerome to (former Stanford guard) Brevin Knight. Brevin has proven himself with a 10-year NBA career and having his father as a coach helped. They are both small and very quick with the ball and very good players. It’s not fair to compare them, but both very good players.”

Talk about being picked first and Stanford being picked ninth
“I think Johnny [Dawkins] is going to have a great team. Johnny is in the process of having a very good recruiting class. It’s just a matter of time before he gets the players he wants. It’s hard to sustain year after year. Lute Olson did it at Arizona and Ben Howland is doing it at UCLA now.”
