Matthew Bryan-Amaning may be the biggest guy on the court for the Husky basketball team, but he is ready to run up-and-down the floor with the talented UW backcourt.
GoHuskies.com: What's it like to have the season starting up again?
Matthew Bryan-Amaning: 'Good, exciting. We're just trying to get ready, really.'
GH.com: There's been a big void left by John Brockman. What are you guys doing to fill it?
MBA: 'It's gang effort, obviously. All the post guys have been working hard, going at it in practice so far. Also, this summer we were working with Spencer [Hawes], Nick Collison, and guys like that to get ready for the season.'
GH.com: What are the post players -- specifically you, Darnell Gant, and Tyrese Breshers -- going to each bring individually to fill that gap?
MBA:'Everybody's just bringing it. Myself, I'm just working on post moves and finishing around the bucket a lot more. Darnell put a lot of weight on so he could play more in the post. Obviously everybody's seen him shoot; he likes that 15-footer a lot better than last season. He's also posting up more. And Tyrese, he's sort of like Brock. He's the same height, same weight -- actually he's a little heavier -- right now he's as strong as Brockman was as a senior. You know, doing that type of stuff. When we're out there we're just going after it on rebounding and keeping the intensity high.'
GH.com: How does having someone with strength like Brockman or Breshers make your job easier inside?
MBA: 'A lot easier. They consume so much room. Whether it's rebounding or just playing on offense or defense. They just take up so much room that it opens up the game and makes it way easier for myself and Darnell.'
GH.com: Each summer you go play for the National Team in Britain. Playing international ball with a completely different group of guys, what do you work on? What parts of the game do you focus on improving when you're playing with them?
MBA: 'It helps me refine my skills. Obviously, I'm not playing at the same level I'm playing at over here. Most of the summer, Coach gets it in my head something he wants me to work on, even if it's just running the floor or something like that. This summer, I worked on shooting from the mid-range a lot more. I get to practice in game situations.'
GH.com: You guys have got a real fast backcourt with the addition of Abdul Gaddy to go along with Isaiah Thomas and Venoy Overton. There will be a lot of chance to run the court this year, and I know that makes you happy. What's it like playing with those quick guards?
MBA: 'Those guys are different types of players. Gaddy's a pass-first guard, there's a lot of size on him for a point guard. It's going to be a lot of fun playing with him because he sees the court so well. Our team in general, as a whole, is so much quicker, athletic, we've got guys that can play multiple positions, it's just going to be fun to see. We've got a lot of bodies coming in and out.'
