Beavers to Wrap Up Fall Season in Hawai'i
Nov. 1, 2009
The Oregon State women's golf team is set to wrap up its fall season at the Turtle Bay Resort College Invitational hosted by the University of Hawai'I, Mon.-Wed., Nov. 2-4.
The tournament will be played on the George Fazio and Arnold Palmer courses at the Turtle Bay Resort in Kahuku on the island of O'ahu. It is a 54-hole tournament consisting of three 18-hole rounds with one being played each day. The first two rounds will be played on the 6,261-yard, par-72 Fazio Course and the final round will be played on the 6,361-yard, par-72 Palmer Course. Tee times will begin at 7:20 a.m. on Monday with the Beavers teeing it up at 8:05 a.m.
'We've had a couple weeks to re-group and have had time to catch up with school now we need to get our focus back on the golf course for the next few days,' assistant coach Kailin Downs said. 'We had four rounds of qualifying and the scores were pretty good. We'll need to play better than we have this fall and I expect our team to be competitive this week.'
The 18-team tournament field includes three teams ranked among the top 15 in the nation - No. 1 UCLA, No. 9 USC and No. 15 California. In addition, the Beavers will face BYU, Gonzaga, Hawai'I, Long Beach State, New Mexico State, Oral Roberts, Oregon, Oregon State, San Diego State, San Jose State, Santa Clara, Toledo, Tulsa, UC Davis and Washington.
'This is the best field we've seen this fall,' Downs said. 'Some of the top Pac-10 teams will be there and so we'll need to play well. I'm excited for the new format for this event - it will be running in conjunction with the men's tournament and we'll get to play two really great courses.'
Five Oregon State golfers will compete as a team with the top four scores of each round counting toward the overall team score. Those making the trip to O'ahu are seniors Lauren Archer and Brittany Stewart, junior Cara Freeman, sophomore Whitney French and freshman Chelsey Lind.
