Bruins Prepare for Collegiate Invitational at Turtle Bay
Nov. 1, 2009
The top-ranked UCLA women's golf team will tee it up Monday at the inaugural Turtle Bay Resort Collegiate, hosted by the University of Hawaii at the Turtle Bay Resort on O'ahu's North Shore.
For the fourth consecutive event, UCLA will compete in a tournament with USC in the field. In their previous three tournaments, the Bruins have beaten the Trojans twice.
Representing UCLA this week will be two juniors, two sophomores and a freshman, plus one freshman individual.
UCLA will be without senior All-American Sydney Michaels, replacing her in the lineup with fourth-year junior Lalita Boonnoppornkul. Monday's start will be Boonnoppornkul's first in the team lineup since her freshman year in the fall of 2006.
'The experience in the lineup will be good for Lalita,' said Head Coach Carrie Forsyth. 'She is a walk-on who has worked her way up through the ranks. She is anxious to play.'
Sophomore All-American Stephanie Kono and classmate Brianna Do are both ranked among the nation's Top 20 players. Kono, ranked 10th, tied for fifth at the Fall Preview and leads the team with three rounds under 70. Do, ranked 18th, is averaging more than five shots better than her freshman season. She recorded her best finish at Stanford (T6) three weeks ago.
Junior All-American Glory Yang will be the Bruins' most experienced player this week. In two-and-a-half seasons, she has made 24 starts and played in nearly 70 rounds.
Freshman Tiffany Lua was ranked 42nd last week. She is averaging 72.6 in eight rounds with one round under 70 and one Top 10 result.
Freshman Stacy Kim will be making her first appearance for the Bruins at this event, playing as an individual.
'Obviously, we're fairly pleased with our progress this fall,' said Forsyth. We've shown that we're a team that can compete with anyone and that we're very consistent.'
