Nov. 1, 2009
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Four Oregon State players scored in double figures while the defense forced 22 Southern Oregon turnovers as the Beavers cruised to a 94-53 win over the Raiders in the men's basketball exhibition opener on Sunday.
'It's nice to win the games you are supposed to win. Last year we had a tough time with our first exhibition game and this was a nice change from last year,' head coach Craig Robinson said. 'It was good to see the guys take the early part of this game very seriously. What you got to see today is that the depth is really going to help us this season.'
Oregon State cruised from the opening tip, scoring the first eight points of the contest. Southern Oregon cut the lead to 12-8 with 13:38 left in the first half; however, the Beavers would go on a 24-4 run over the next 10 minutes to put the game away.
Omari Johnson led four Oregon State players in double figures with 16 points as the junior connected on 6-of-8 from the floor.
All 14 players who suited up for Oregon State saw action in the contest as fans had their first look at four Beavers newcomers: freshmen Angus Brandt, Joe Burton and Jared Cunningham as well as transfer Chris Richard.
Each player contributed in the victory, highlighted by Brandt, who had five points, six rebounds and four blocks in just 14 minutes of action. Cunningham tallied seven points and two assists while Burton added six points and two rebounds.
Oregon State shot 56.5 percent from the floor (35-of-62) while holding Southern Oregon to just 37.5 percent (18-of-48) from the field.
The Beavers tallied 17 steals on the night as S. Tarver, Johnson and Haynes each registered four swipes.
Armani Jackson led the Raiders with 14 points while Trevor McCay was the only other Southern Oregon player in double figures, with 10 points.
Oregon State will close out the exhibition portion of the schedule on Saturday, Nov. 7, when the Beavers host Western Oregon at 1:00 p.m.
