WSU Women in Ninth after First Round

Austin, Texas - The Washington State women's golf team performed well today in Texas at the par-70, 5,938 yard Onion Creek Golf Club. With three golfers right around par and two in the top 25 the Cougars are currently in ninth place out of the 21-team field. Unfortunately the second round could not be completed due to darkness but the teams will start earlier tomorrow in order to finish on time.

Freshman Ali Thompson has once again led the team in the first round as she has done in all five tournaments so far this season. With a 70(E) in the first round Thompson in currently in a tie for 10th place and is looking to capture her third top-10 finish of the season.

Fellow freshman Emma Betland maintains her spot on the team right behind Thompson, shooting a 71(+1). She is tied for 17th and only one stroke back from the top 10. Betland has finished in the top 25 three times this season and is looking to make this her fourth.

Redshirt junior Allison Travis had her lowest round of the season with a 72(+2) and is tied for 27th. Only one stroke out of the 25th, Travis is trying to make it her third career top-25 finish.

Sophomore Kristen Allard carded a 78(+8) and freshman Ellen Park is shot a first round of 92(+22).

The Cougars finished round one with a team total of 291(+11), which is the best round as a team so far this season. In ninth place they are not that far behind, only four strokes back from the top five, which includes two nationally ranked teams. WSU is only 8 strokes back from second place and currently stand in front of the following nationally ranked teams: Texas Tech(39), Wisconsin(42), Iowa State(46) and Missouri(47).

The continuation of the second round and the final round will be played tomorrow with a shotgun start at 7:30am.
