Post Game Quotes: Cal vs Vanguard, Nov. 3, 2009

Head Coach Joanne Boyle
'It was good to just get a game in underneath our belts. Turn the lights on. Get some people in the building. Obviously, the first half was settling in to everything. I expected that. I felt we settled down and came back in the second half and did some good things. Obviously we still have a long way to go. It is nice to just roll the ball out and get six freshmen into the game and let them get a taste of it.'
'I thought we did a great job on the boards. I thought DeNesha had a great game. I told our posts they need to run and get early touches on the block. I thought they did a great job on that. I thought Brenna had a great game rebounding. We played at the pace that we wanted, getting those easy touches. But we had 23 turnovers, so it is cleaning that piece of it up. I am liking the pace we are going at. I liked our press a little bit. I don't think we did a great job defensively. We gave them too many looks. They are doing the dribble drive offense, and that is tough to guard especially when you have traditional posts. We are not a team that routinely gives up a lot of points. I think we were pretty exposed as a young group, defensively.'
'I think the freshmen played really well. I don't think anyone expected them to rise to the occasion like they did. We are a defensive team. And we all kind of have to buy in. And myself and Tasha, we need to lead better than we did tonight. We're going to watch film tomorrow and get better.'
'We were just trying to keep the minutes balanced as much as we could to get people touches, rotations, different looks with our posts. Playing people together, different combinations. Same with the perimeter. It gives us a coaches a chance to look at match-ups and different looks out there. Hopefully, that is our thing, to have more depth, so it becomes all about match-ups.'
Senior Guard Alexis Gray-Lawson
'It starts with the guards on defense. I think we need to pressure a little more when we are in a better stance. If we had done that, it wouldn't have been so hard on our post players. With them being so young, we can't put them in a position like that.'
Freshman forward DeNesha Stallworth
'My first game was very exciting. I really enjoyed it. It opened my eyes and showed me what college basketball is really like. It is a real big transition. But, overall, I loved it.'
