Trojan Tennis Enters Into Elite Action

Nov. 3, 2009

With strong All-American finishes and deep runs at their respective regional championships last month, the USC men's and women's teams have several players set to rep Troy at this week's prestigious ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. Already settled into things in New Haven, Conn., are USC's Maria Sanchez, Robert Farah and Steve Johnson, who open up competition on the Yale campus on Thursday (Nov. 5). The tournament runs Nov. 5-8.

Maria Sanchez punched her ticket to this year's ITA National Indoor championships by claiming her second straight regional singles title. The USC junior won the 2009 Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional singles crown on October 26 with a hard-fought win over UCLA's Yasmin Schnack to make it back-to-back regional crowns and earn a trip to New Haven for more singles play. Sanchez is ranked #17 in the ITA preseason singles rankings and carries a six-match win streak into this week's action.

On the men's side of things, Robert Farah and Steve Johnson both pushed through to last month's D'Novo/ITA All-American Championship singles semifinals to score spots in the ITA National Indoor singles draw. A week later, the pair secured a place in ITA National Indoor doubles play with the pair's second straight regional doubles championship. Farah/Johnson captured the 2009 Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional doubles championship with a dominating performance in the title match against Pepperdine's Fanselow/Moss. Robert Farah ranks #3 in the nation in the ITA preseason singles rankings, with Steve Johnson ranked #18. In doubles, Farah/Johnson are #3 in the nation. Both players are 4-1 in singles play on the year, and are 5-1 in doubles.

While Sanchez, Farah and Johnson battle at Yale, the rest of their Trojan teammates will also be in action at more local sites. The USC men will compete at the Southern California Intercollegiates at UCLA from Nov. 5-8. Meanwhile, the USC women are set for competition at the Duals in the Desert in Palm Springs, Calif.
