UA Romps Past Augustana
Nov. 4, 2009
TUCSON--The Arizona men's basketball team had little trouble with visiting Division II Augustana College in UA head coach Sean Miller's debut game with an exhibition opening victory, 92-76, Wednesday night in McKale Center.
Miller got scoring from nine players in the first half and 10 overall, led by Jamelle Horne with a team-high 19 points. Four players scored in double figures with support from freshmen Derrick Williams (14) and Kevin Parrom (12). Horne led all rebounders with 10 for a double-double and blocked three shots.
Wildcat senior guard Nic Wise returned to his starting role at the point after a long week nursing an ankle sprain, netting 12 points, with five assists and two steals in 19 minutes.
The Cats used an 11-0 run four minutes into the game to boost a narrow lead to double digits, 21-8, and never looked back. Later, to close the half, UA got a 15-7 spurt in the final four minutes to stretch the lead to 16 at the break, 50-34.
Sophomore guard Cody Schilling led Augustana with a game-high 25 points, backed by 16 from Cameron McCaffrey and 12 from Lee Stephens. The Vikings shot 37 percent from the field in the first half and 38 percent for the game, while Arizona hit at a steady 55 percent rate. UA enjoyed a small margin on the boards, 40-34, and turnovers were split evenly with 13 for the Vikings and 15 for Arizona.
Arizona shot .467 from three-point range with a 7-for-15 effort, not quite matched by the Vikes with 7-for-19 rate (.368)
The Cats played without returning 2008-09 starting guard Kyle Fogg, who was not on the bench due to illness.
Arizona did not pull away in the second half. Augustana came out and played inspired defense to open the period, matching UA for five minutes to keep the halftime margin from growing, in fact trimming it to a 59-46 deficit. But a minute later Wise hit a three-pointer to push the lead back to 16, 64-48, at the 13:50 mark.
UA plays another exhibition game next week against Western New Mexico on Nov. 10 before opening the regular season at home against Northern Arizona on Nov. 15.
