Stanford Wrestling Opens 2009-10 Season With Annual Wrestle-Offs Friday

THIS WEEK: The Stanford wrestling squad will get a head start on the 2009-10 season this week as it hosts its annual wrestle-offs. The weekend will give fans an early preview of the Stanford season, which officially gets underway Nov. 14.

ABOUT WRESTLE-OFFS: Wrestle-offs, which will be held at Burnham Pavilion at 6 p.m. Fridya, feature showdowns between the top two wrestlers in each weight class. The results of each bout will determine the Cardinal’s initial starting lineup. Fans are encouraged to come catch an early glimpse of the team, as wrestle-offs are free and open to the public.

UP NEXT: Stanford officially begins the season on Nov. 14 at the Northwestern Duals in Evanston, Ill. The Cardinal will wrestle Purdue at 10 a.m., host Northwestern at Noon and Northern Iowa at 2 p.m. All three opponents ended the 2008-09 season ranked in the top-25 of the NWCA Coaches Poll.

TOP NOTCH RETURNERS: Stanford’s 17 returners are highlighted by a trio of NCAA qualifiers. Redshirt juniors Lucas Espericueta and Zack Giesen and redshirt sophomore Nick Amuchastegui. All three are Pac-10 placewinners and in the top-5 on Stanford’s freshman wins list. They have combined to post 137 wins thus far and are all on pace to finish their careers at Stanford in the top-10 in careeer wins.

FRESH FACES: Stanford has nine newcomers on its roster this year. Highlighting the rookies are four state champions in Iowa’s Bret Baumbach, Missouri’s Ryan Mango and Kyle Meyer and Wisconsin’s Sam Umlauf. Additionally, the new faces on the Cardinal roster include Anthony Degani (Crystal Lake, Ill.), Jordan Gray (Essex Junction, Vt.), Richard Kessler (Elkhorn, Wis.), Tek Li (San Francisco, Calif.) and Dylan Rush (Naalehu, Hawai’i).

IN THE RANKINGS: Redshirt sophomore Nick Amuchastegui and redshirt junior Zack Giesen are listed among the top-20 in the InterMat preseason rankings to begin the 2009-10 season. Amuchastegui comes in at No. 18 in the 165 pound weight class, while Giesen holds the No. 15 slot at 184 pounds.

NWCA All-STAR CLASSIC: Redshirt junior Zack Giesen will be a 'featured bout' in the 2009 NWCA All-Star Classic. The event will take place in Fullerton, Calif., on Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. Giesen will square off against Enoch Francois of Cal Baptist University.

HEAD COACH Jason Borrelli: Stanford is under the guidance of a second-year head coach Jason Borrelli. In his first season at the helm of the program, the Cardinal earned eight dual wins, had four top-three Pac-10 placers for the first time in more than two decades and sent two wrestlers to the NCAA Championships in St. Louis. Borrelli, a former Central Michigan standout, first came to The Farm as an assistant coach in 2007 and quickly helped guide the Cardinal to one of its most successfull seasons in school history.
