Chang and Goransson Move Ahead at Thunderbird Invitational

TEMPE, Ariz. - California women's tennis sophomore Stephany Chang and freshman Annie Goransson advanced to the singles quarterfinal of the 15th-annual Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational at Whiteman Tennis Center Friday, Nov. 6. The two Golden Bears will take on the top two seeds in the tournament in 9:30 a.m. MST matches on Saturday, Nov. 7. Chang draws top-seeded No. 7 Kelcy McKenna of Arizona State and Goransson will face second-seeded No. 35 Nadia Abdala of Arizona State. Singles semifinal matches will take place at approximately 12:30 p.m. MST.

Chang defeated Arizona State's Amanda Martin, 6-1, 6-0, in the first round before she bounced back from dropping her first set against Juliette Coupez of San Diego, to get a win in the round of 16, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Goransson upended Marite Raygada of San Diego, 6-0, 6-1, in the first round before she also needed to come from behind to defeat Bianca Jochimsen of Boise State in the round of 16, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Freshman Tayler Davis defeated Michigan's Kari Wig, 6-3, 6-3, in the first round but ran into trouble in the round of 16 as she was eliminated by the third seed, No. 68-ranked Micaela Hein of Arizona State. In three other Cal versus Michigan first-round matches, the Wolverines prevailed across the board. Sophomore Catalina Visico fell to Michelle Sulahian, 6-1, 6-1; freshman Nelly Radeva dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Tania Mahtani; and senior Kasia Siwosz was unable to wrestle away the tiebreaker in her second set as she was turned away, 6-0, 7-6, and 7-3 in the breaker.

Radeva and Siwosz each advanced to their consolation bracket quarterfinal with wins, however. Radeva defeated Arizona State's Sianna Simmons, 6-2, 6-0; and Siwosz went the distance with Paloma Escobedo of Ohio State before getting a 7-6, 6-7, 6-3 victory. Visico fell, 6-0, 6-0, to Raygada in her consolation match. Singles players eliminated in the round of 16 were placed into the Maroon Consolation Draw with quarterfinal matches taking place at 11 a.m. MST on Saturday, Nov. 7.

In doubles round-robin matches, Davis and Goransson teamed up to defeat Mahtani and Taylor Fournier of Michigan, 8-4; and Radeva and Siwosz took out Boise State's, Stephanie Jasper and Jochimsen, 8-3. Chang and Visico fell, 8-5, as they faced a mixed pair in ASU's Martin and Ohio State's Kara Cecil.
