Steve Johnson Gets It Done, Wins ITA National Indoor Title
Nov. 8, 2009
NEW HAVEN, CONN. -- USC sophomore Steve Johnson pinned up another marquee singles win today, as the Trojan claimed the ITA National Indoor Championship singles crown with an intense victory in New Haven, Conn. Up against Guillermo Gomez of Georgia Tech, Johnson won out in a third-set tiebreaker to notch a 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (4) victory and win the prestigious singles title.
Johnson and Gomez had locked horns before, with Johnson getting a three-setter over the Yellow Jacket during last season's NCAA Singles tournament. Once again, Johnson pushed through to victory against Gomez. In today's title match, Johnson got up a break and held on to pick up the first set 6-4. Gomez would hang tight and pull off the second set in a tiebreak, and the third would stay similarly neck-and-neck. Pushed again to a tiebreaker to decide the third set and the match, Johnson would prevail and stake his claim on the singles crown with a 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (4) win.
Back on the West Coast, Johnson's fellow sophomore teammate Daniel Nguyen went into a title match of his own at the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships. Up against Pepperdine's No. 2 seed Bassam Beidas, No. 5 seeded Nguyen forced the issue with a second-set tiebreak win, but Beidas got the win in a 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 decision.
