Three Golden Bears Advance to Semifinals at SMC Invitational

Nov. 7, 2009

MORAGA, Calif. - The California men's tennis team pushed three players into the Red Flight singles semifinal round of the 2009 Saint Mary's Invitational at Timothy Korth Tennis Complex on Saturday, Nov. 7. Second-seeded junior Bozhidar Katsarov, third-seeded freshman Christoffer Konigsfeldt and eighth-seeded sophomore Nick Andrews give the Golden Bears three of the four available spots in the singles semifinal. Due to rain and wet-court delays, only the singles main draws will be played to completion.

Cal had a player in all but one of the eight Red Flight round-of-16 matches. Senior Bijan Hejazi collected a 7-6, 6-4 win in the first round before he fell to former Bear seventh-seeded Thai Tu of San Francisco, 3-6, 6-2, 10-2 in the third-set tiebreaker. Freshman Riki McLachlan needed three sets to advance out of the first round as he took out Rob Foy of Cal Poly, 7-6, 0-6, 6-2; but fell to fifth-seeded Andrew Kells of Santa Clara, 6-2, 7-5, in the round of 16. Sophomore Sky Lovill earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over Sebastian Bell of Cal Poly in the first round before bowing out to sixth-seeded Kyle Dandan of Santa Clara in the second round, 7-5, 6-3.

Sophomore Tommie Murphy completed his first-round match on Friday, Nov. 6, but drew top-seeded Wessim Derbel of Nevada in the round of 16 where he fell, 3-6, 6-1, 10-5, in the third-set tiebreaker. Junior Zach Gilbert wasn't able to advance out of the first round as he fell in three sets, 6-3, 6-7, 7-5, to Jay Wong of Santa Clara. Cal's round of 16 winners included Katarov, who defeated USF's Jacob Hartwig, 6-1, 7-5; Konigsfeldt, with a 6-2, 3-6, 14-12, win against Lucas Tirelli of Saint Mary's; and Andrews, who defeated Gavin Leon of Saint Mary's, 6-2, 6-2.
