O'Hara, Press Named Top Drawer's Co-Players of the Year

STANFORD, Calif. -

Top Drawer Soccer's national honors

High-scoring Stanford forwards Kelley O’Hara and Christen Press were named national co-Players of the Year by TopDrawerSoccer.com on Thursday.

The nation’s top goal-scoring tandem with a combined 100 points between them, O’Hara and Press have complimented each other all season, punishing defenses that paid too much attention to one or the other.

“It seems a bit forced to recognize one of the forwards and not the other given their body of work over the season thus far,” Top Drawer Soccer editor Rob Ziegler wrote on his Web site.

In addition, both players were joined by teammate Ali Riley on Top Drawer’s 11-player Team of the Season first team. This is the first first-team All-America honor for each player.

Four Stanford players were recognized on Top Drawer’s All-Rookie teams. Defenders Alina Garciamendez and Rachel Quon were named to the first team, and midfielder Mariah Nogueira and forward Courtney Verloo to the second.

O’Hara, the Pacific-10 Conference Player of the Year, has broken school season records for points (55) and goals (23) and is closing in on career records in both categories. O’Hara also has nine assists.

Press has scored 16 goals and has 13 assists, one off the Stanford season record. Her speed and finesse play perfectly off O’Hara’s charging style. Both are fast and skillful, with the ability to break down a defense and score in many different ways.

According to research by collegesoccer360.com, O’Hara and Press are on the verge of becoming the 24th pair of Division I teammates to reach 50 points in the same season, and only the third pair in the past nine seasons.

Press has scored eight goals that were assisted by O’Hara, and O’Hara has scored seven that were assisted by Press.

Only once has Stanford had a player recognized as a national player of the year, and that was Julie Foudy, who earned Soccer America’s honor in 1991.
