California Signs Two Gymnasts to National Letters of Intent

Nov. 13, 2009

The California Golden Bear's Women's Gymnastics team and head coach Cari DuBois announced that Alicia Asturias and Dallas Crawford have signed National Letters of Intent to come and compete for Cal in the 2011 season.

Alicia Asturias of Granite Bay, Calif. qualified for JO Nationals while competing for Rancho Cordova's Technique Gymnastics. Last season, she was second place at Regionals in the all-around and in the beam. She went on to finish 12th in the all-around and fifth in the vault at JO Nationals. In the 2008 State Championships, she finished first on the vault, third on the bars, second on the beam, and third in the all-around. She also qualified for Nationals in 2007 after finishing second in the floor at Regionals. Asturias was also named to the MSO Honorable Mention list of ten individual gymnasts from around the country that are deserving of national attention.

'Alicia really impresses me with her overall athleticism,' said DuBois. 'She is strong. She's flexible. She's aggressive. She's an overall athlete. She has a full-twisting Pak salto. Her bars impress me as well as her overall power.'

Dallas Crawford, from Silver Creek High School in San Jose, is a Level 10 gymnast competing at Airborne Gymnastics. At the 2008 JO Nationals, she finished 23rd after winning the all around and bars competitions at the Regionals. In 2007, she was the level 9 State vault, bars and all-around Champion. She was the level 9 State Champion in vault in 2006 and vault and all-around in 2005. Crawford is the sixth member of Airborne to join the Bears with Carol Chang, Stefanie Cheng, Avery Gee, Mariesah Pierce and Arla Rosenzweig also coming from that program. Airborne was ranked as the No. 4 team in America in the 2007 MSO rankings.

'With Dallas coming from Airborne, I have been able to watch her develop and improve over the years,' said DuBois. 'Her heart has been here. She has let us know how much she wanted to go to Cal. I have been nothing but impressed with her hard work and the way she has developed and battled back from injury. I know she is going to have a great year next year.'

Cal has only one senior, Sophia Hocini, on the 2010 roster. The team begins competition on Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010 when they host Arizona State in a dual meet at Haas Pavilion.
