Three Standout Gymnasts Sign with Beavers
Nov. 13, 2009
Three highly sought after gymnasts signed National Letters of Intent to compete at Oregon State beginning in 2010-11 head gymnastics coach Tanya Chaplin announced Friday.
The 2010 recruiting class consists of Brittany Harris (Broken Arrow, Okla./Krafft Gymnastics Academy), Britney Ranzy (Chesapeake, Va./Excalibur Gymnastics) and Amanda Schulberg (Henderson, Nev./Gymcats).
'I am excited to officially welcome these three young women to our gymnastics program,' Chaplin said 'Enthusiastic, dynamic, and determined are a few words that describe this recruiting class. They are a talented and accomplished group of athletes that will make an immediate impact on our team.'
Brittany Harris, the daughter of Harriett and Steve Harris, a former NBA player, has found great success at the Junior Olympic National Championships throughout her career. In 2009, she finished sixth in the all-around and fourth on the uneven bars at the Junior Olympic Championships and in 2008 she finished 10th in the all-around. Harris trains at Krafft Gymnastics Academy under coaches Kristi Krafft and Tony Pineda, a former teammate of OSU associate head coach Michael Chaplin at UCLA. Watch Harris on YouTube.
'There were a lot of factors that drew me to Oregon State, the coaches, gymnasts and school pride were very notable to me,' Harris said. 'The coaches always have a great attitude and made me feel like I was at home. The team chemistry is incredible and they act as one family shooting for the same goal. I can't wait to join that Beaver family. I fell in love with the campus the moment I arrived and I really love that the whole town supports the school.'
Britney Ranzy, the daughter of Donna and Charles Ranzy, is a U.S. Senior International Elite veteran. In 2009, she finished fifth on the vault at the U.S. Cover Girl Classic. Ranzy participated in the 2008 U.S. Olympic trials placing third on the vault and also earned a 14th place finish in the all-around at the U.S. Visa National Championships. Ranzy has spent most of her career training at two elite clubs on the east coast, Hill's Gymnastics in Maryland under Kelli Hill and currently at Excalibur Gymnastics in Virginia Beach, Va. where she is coached by Dena and Jim Walker. 'I am so excited to be a part of the Oregon State gymnastics team,' Ranzy said. 'I have great respect for the coaches. They helped me feel like a part of the team before I even came on my official visit. The feeling was reinforced during and after my recruiting trip when I had the chance to meet the team. My new teammates have been very accepting and welcomed me to Beaver Nation immediately. The community is so supportive of its Oregon State student-athletes and I love that.'
Amanda Schulberg, the daughter of Dawn and Robert Schulberg, has had an illustrious career at the J.O. National Championships and is a 2009 J.O. National Team member. She finished second in the all-around at the 2009 J.O. National Championships. In addition, she earned a second place finish on the bars and fourth on vault at the 2009 national meet. She finished seventh in the all-around in 2008. Schulberg trains at Gymcats in Las Vegas under coaches Cassie Rice and Jill Preston. Watch Schulberg on YouTube.
'I'm very close with my club coaches, so I knew that my future coaches would be a very important factor with my college choice,' Schulberg said. 'I met John (Carney) and knew that our chemistry was what I was looking for. When I met Tanya (Chaplin) and Michael (Chaplin) I was assured that I had found what I want for my college experience. During my visit to OSU everyone treated me as though I was already a part of the team and the Beaver family. That's how I know I couldn't have made a better decision than choosing Oregon State.'
Oregon State gets its season underway Thursday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m. with the annual Orange & Black Exhibition.
