Nov. 14, 2009
STANFORD, Calif. -- The seventh-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team earned its third straight victory as it swept Oregon State, 25-18, 25-18, 25-19, Saturday at Maples Pavilion. The Cardinal is now 18-7 overall and 11-4 in Pac-10 play, while the Beavers drop to 12-14 on the season and 3-11 in conference action. Stanford is a perfect 50-0 all-time against OSU. With the win, and a UCLA loss to Washington, the Cardinal is now in a three-way tie for first-place in the Pac-10 Conference.
Junior Alix Klineman led the team with 13 kills, five digs and two aces. Senior Janet Okogbaa went 9-3-14 to hit .429, while sophomore Stephanie Browne hit .667 (7-1-9). Junior Cassidy Lichtman recorded her 18th double-double of the season with 14 assists and 10 digs and junior libero Gabi Ailes pitched in with 15 digs. As a team, Stanford hit .317, while holding OSU to a .198 clip.
Stanford spread the offense around in the beginning of the opening set as five different players picked up kills. With the score tied at eight, OSU used a 4-1 run to pull ahead of the Cardinal. Kills by redshirt freshman Jessica Walker and sophomore Stephanie Browne tied the set at 12-12. With the score remaining tied at 16, Stanford posted a 9-2 run to close out the first set. The Cardinal hit .371 in the opening set, while Klineman led the team with five kills.
The Cardinal carried over its momentum from the first set to jump out to a 9-1 lead to start the second. Lichtman drilled back-to-back kills and Walker and Browne teamed up for two blocks during that stretch. Attack errors by the Beavers and an ace by sophomore Katherine Sebastian extended the Cardinal lead to 12. Up 22-8, OSU caught Stanford off guard as they earned six straight points to cut the lead to 22-14. However, it wasn't enough as the Cardinal went on to capture the second set, 25-18.
Stanford quickly pulled out to a 5-2 lead to start the third as Klineman picked up two kills and Okogbaa recorded a solo block. The Cardinal increased its lead on errors by the Beavers and another kill by Klineman to go up 11-6. Stanford would go up 19-11, but a 4-1 run by OSU would cut the Cardinal lead to five at 20-15. Kills by Browne and Lichtman, an ace by Walker and a block by Okogbaa would seal the sweep for Stanford.
Stanford continues Pac-10 play next weekend at the Arizona schools. The Cardinal travels to Tucson, Ariz., to face the Arizona Wildcats, Friday, Nov. 20 before taking on the Arizona State Sun Devils in Tempe on Saturday, Nov. 21. Both matches are scheduled for 7 p.m. MT.
