Post Game Quotes: Nov. 15, 2009 vs. Idaho State
Nov. 15, 2009
Head Coach Joanne Boyle
'I think it was a great first game for us. We tried to come out and be aggressive and press a little bit, play a little match-up zone and man. Our defense is way ahead of our offense right now, so I think the defense really got us jumpstarted. Idaho State does a really good job. They run a lot of motion, so we didn't want to straight-up play man-to-man. We would have just ended up chasing them all over. They are very guard-like, even their post players. So we switched it up a little bit and I thought our kids did a really good job with it.'
On how consistently the team played throughout the game
'We talked about that in the locker room right before I came up here. I think the first three minutes of the second half was our only real lull. I think we came out a little flat. We are always trying to win the first five minutes of every half. Those are momentum changers for people. If you come out flat, it is hard to recover. It was our only spell. I thought they did a good job with that, and that is something we weren't really able to do last year until midseason. You have to look at your opponents, but still, the fact that they were able to be a little fresher this year with our added depth, I think that is really going to help them.'
On Stallworth's three-pointer
'I told her it better be (part of her game from now on). Ashley Walker didn't have a three-point shot until she was a senior, so to see a freshman post be able to do that now, it really spreads the defense. Things will open up in the middle. Once the young post players learn how to seal and call for the high-low, that will become part of her game. That is not where we are at right now. As much as she can extend it for us, that is only going to help.
On where the team is in terms of development
'We're up and down. There are days when we look great and days when we don't look so great. That's part of growing as a freshman. We need to start getting some game minutes. Getting rotations down and understanding who does what well against other people other than ourselves and practice players. We din't have a lot of stuff in right now, it has been a lot of teaching and grinding. The last couple of years, we have thrown tons of stuff in, but we have slowed that down because we want them to be solid with what we have. Eventually we will give them more stuff. It has been a little bit of a slow process, but you expect that with freshmen.'
Freshman forward DeNesha Stallworth
On how she felt playing her first official Cal game
'I was very nervous, but I just looked at it like any other game. If I just go out and play basketball and work hard, it will all just come to me.'
Senior guard Natasha Vital
On how having to play fewer minutes is affecting her game this year
'When I have to play a lot of minutes, I sort of had to pace myself to try to save my legs for the rest of the game. Only having to play a shorter amount of time, my legs felt fresh and I was able to give 100 percent the whole time I was out there.'
On the difference between this team and last year's'We have a lot more depth. Everybbody on this team scored tonight. I feel that our defense was really good for us being as young as we are. There is no reason we can't go as far as we did last year and beyond.'
