Nov. 16, 2009

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- STANFORD sophomore forward Nnemkadi Ogwumike was named the Player of the Week for the opening week of the season, Nov. 9-16, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.

Nnemkadi Ogwumike (Cypress, Texas) led the Cardinal on a successful East Coast swing in the opening weekend of the 2009-10 campaign, as Stanford posted dominating wins at Old Dominion (89-56) and at No. 25 Rutgers (81-66).

Ogumike averaged 23 points, 9.5 rebounds and shot 64 percent from the floor over the weekend. She posted her first double-double of the season in the first game of the year, chipping in 25 points to go with 12 boards against the Lady Monarchs. She was also 10-for-14 from the floor in that game. She followed up with a 21-point, 7-rebound performance against the Scarlet Knights, on an evening when RU head coach C. Vivian Stringer was being honored prior to the start of the game. Ogwumike also made a difference on the defensive end, averaging 2.5 steals over the two games.

This marks the first-career Pac-10 Player of the Week honor for Ogwumike and the 69th selection all-time for a Stanford player.

The Cardinal returns to its home state of California, where it will remain for just over a month. Stanford welcomes Pepperdine on Thursday, Nov. 19 and makes the short drive to UC Davis on Sunday, Nov. 22.
