ARIZONA earned a 17-point win in the season opener against Northern Arizona in what was also the first game for Sean Miller as the Wildcat head coach.  Of the eight Arizona coaches to occupy the position since the 1925-26 season, Miller is the sixth mentor to win his debut. Arizona’s 87-70 win over Northern Arizona not only gave Miller his first win at Arizona, but also gave him the biggest win in a UA head coach debut in the last 84 seasons.

ARIZONA STATE’s 87-35 win over Western Illinois was the biggest margin of victory since another 52-point win (122-70) on Dec. 10, 1996, over Houston Baptist. ASU held Western Illinois to just 35 points, the fewest by a Sun Devil team since it beat Washington of Saint Louis 47-34 in the 1949-50 season. ASU scored less than 52 points, its margin of victory vs. Western Illinois, seven times in Herb Sendek’s first year.

CALIFORNIA visits Madison Square Garden for the 2K Sports Classic Benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer. The Bears had considerable success the last time they played in the Garden, capturing the National Invitation Tournament title with a 61-60 win over Clemson.

OREGON senior G Tajuan Porter earned MVP honors of the BTI Tip-Off Tournament as he averaged 18.7 points in three games. He hit 11-of-26 from three-point range, pushing him to the top of the school’s all-time list with 290 three-point field goals.

WASHINGTON put up 111 points in its 111-55 win over Portland State. It was the most points scored by the Huskies since a 112-65 win over Loyla Marymount on Nov. 25, 2006. The 56-point margin of victory is the greatest since a 67-point margin of victory in a 118-51 win over Morgan State on Nov. 13, 2005, and it’s the fifth greatest since 1950.

WASHINGTON STATE posted a 94-66 win over Mississippi Valley State in coach Ken Bone’s debut. It was the first time the Cougars scored more than 90 points in a game since knocking off Washington 98-76 on March 1, 2003. The Cougars up-tempo offense scored 51 points in the second half against the Delta Devils (WSU scored 51 or fewer points in a game six times last season). The 28-point margin of victory is the greatest by a WSU coach in his debut since Kevin Eastman led the Cougars to a 87-59 win over Eastern Washington on Nov. 29, 1995. Prior to that, you have to go back to Jack Friel’s debut in 1928-29 when he led WSU to a 62-18 win over Lewiston State Normal.
