Cardinal Headed to Long Beach for Toshiba
Nov. 17, 2009
STANFORD, Calif.-- Stanford Men's Swimming (2-0) and head coach Skip Kenney will head to Long Beach for the annual Toshiba Cup from Thursday through Saturday for the final meet of the fall season.
The site was home to last year's Pac-10 Championship, the Cardinal's record 28th-straight conference title.
The Cardinal have already posted dual-wins over New Orleans and Hawaii, and competed at meets at Cal and Pacific. There will be 12 men's teams at this week's competition, highlighted by the Cardinal, Hawaii, BYU, Utah and Air Force.
Senior Eugene Godsoe had a solid meet in Berkeley last week, winning the tri-distance backstroke with a time of 1:57, as his times of 48.26 in the 100 backstroke (48.26) and 200 backstroke (1:47.00) are both the fourth-fastest in the nation. Both those times, along with his 50 backstroke time led the field in Berkeley.
Distance swimmer Chad La Tourette, whose summer of five medals propelled him into the season, currently has the sixth-fastest 1000 freestyle time (9:09.14) and the 12th-fastest 500 time (4:29.48). Both those times came at Berkeley, where he won both distance events and won the overall tri-distance meet combing the 200, 500 and 1000 times.
In addition, Bobby Bollier has the 13th-fastest 200 butterfly time (1:49.55) in the nation.
The Cardinal return 15 All-Americans to this year's squad and boast the nation's top recruiting class as well. At last year's Art Adamson Invite, their last meet of the fall season a year ago, over a dozen swimmers posted “A” and “B” standard times propelling them towards a strong spring season.
