No. 1 Stanford Gets by No. 11 Santa Clara to Advance to the Quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament

STANFORD, Calif.- No. 1 Stanford was tested by No. 11 Santa Clara for a full 90 minutes, but was able to preserve a 1-0 win, off a goal by sophomore forward Teresa Noyola to move onto the quarterfinals of the NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament. The win elevates Stanford to 23-0-0 and the Broncos finish their season at 14-8-2.
In a very physical game, the Cardinal came out swinging, getting two quick shots off in the first six minutes. At the 10 minute mark, the Cardinal had a prime chance off a direct kick just outside the box, after Santa Clara's Jenny LaPonte got a yellow card, but the squad was unable to convert. The match went back and forth, with Stanford having another chance in the 30th minute when junior forward Christen Press had a shot go off the crossbar. The Cardinal earned a direct free kick at the 38:41 mark from 25 yards out and sophomore forward Teresa Noyola hit a laser that Santa Clara goalkeeper Bianca Henninger tipped off the crossbar, but the ball rebounded down past the line, to put Stanford up 1-0. The unassisted goal marked Noyola's sixth of the season. Despite outshooting the Broncos 14-4 in the half, Stanford was unable to see the back of the net again, and went into the break with the 1-0 lead.
In the second half the Cardinal came out striking and in the 59th minute of the match the squad had a prime opportunity to go up 2-0 with a beautiful cross by Noyola, but Press knocked her shot over the open goal. Santa Clara was not going down without a fight. With 14 minutes left in the match, Stanford's senior midfielder Hilary Heath served a great corner and senior forward Kelley O'Hara hit a header down to the right post, but it was saved on the goal line by senior forward Kiki Bosio. The Broncos continued to earn chances in the last 10 minutes of the match, but the Stanford back line held strong, holding off Santa Clara's offensive threats. With three minutes left in the match junior goalkeeper Kira Maker made a leaping save off a strong shot from Santa Clara's Jordan Angeli to the upper right corner, keeping the match at 1-0, Stanford. The Cardinal was able to hold off multiple attacks by the Broncos through the final whistle, to win the match, 1-0.
The Cardinal move on to face Boston College in the quarterfinals on Friday, November 27. As the No. 1 seed, Stanford has the potential to host that match, with that decision being made on Sunday, November 22.
