No. 13 Wisconsin 13, Oregon State 22

In his first match as a Beaver, redshirt sophomore Jason Lara (Midway City, Calif.) earned the team’s only bonus point win, defeating Drew Hammen at 125 pounds. Lara added over three minutes of riding time to his already clinched win, taking the 15-6 major decision to get the Beavers rolling.

“I thought we wrestled okay,” Zalesky said. “In some matches, we started slow, but it’s the first meet of the season and we can do better. I think our team expected [to upset] and it wrestled well. Mentally we were prepared and went right at it. The guys believed they could do it.”

Thirteenth-ranked redshirt freshman Mike Mangrum (Auburn, Wash.) was the next to chalk up a victory, earning a near major decision with a 13-6 win over Cole Schmitt at 141 pounds. No. 8 Boise State 25, Oregon State 7

Redshirt sophomore Jason Lara (Midway City, Calif.) tallied his second bonus match of the day against the No. 8 Boise State Broncos, earning another major decision with a 12-4 win over Allen Bartelli.

The Beavers struggled from there on until sophomore Clayton Jack (Vacaville, Calif.) took the floor, wrapping up the meet with a 3-2 decision over Sam Zylstra at heavyweight.

“We got beat in the basics today,” head coach Jim Zalesky said. “Boise State had the inside position, and we didn’t wrestle well on the bottom. Our guys would go for two points sometimes instead of getting one. But I think our young guys learned a lot today. RJ Pena wrestled two top guys, so it was a good test for him and the team. We’re a long ways from where we want to be at the end of the season.”
