Team Awards Announced

Nov. 24, 2009

STANFORD, Calif.--  Stanford Baseball awarded its annual team awards at last Friday's team banquet, celebrating the team and individual player's success during the 2009 season.

The team's oldest award, given annually since 1950, was the Most Valuable Player award and was given to closer Drew Storen. The team's closer from a year ago has already risen to Double-A with the Nationals after a team-leading seven saves, seven wins (7-1) and 3.80 ERA.

The team's two returning starting pitchers, Jordan Pries and Brett Mooneyham, were awarded the team's Most Valuable Freshman award. Mooneyham had a 6-3 record and 4.14 ERA, while Pries was 4-4 with a 4.62 ERA, both over 11 starts.

The team's “Come Through Award” was given to senior first baseman Brent Milleville, who led the team 52 RBIs and 14 homers. The most inspirational award was given to utility player J.J. Jelmini, who battled through injury, but remained a part of the program despite the setbacks.

The most improved player award went to outfielder Kellen Kiilsgaard, who hit .313 last year in 53 games, after appearing in just three games as a freshman.

The Bruce Cameron Memorial Award, given annually to a player with outstanding proficiency in baseball, leadership and academic performance and named after the late third baseman and shortstop who played from 1949-51, was given to Joey August.

Second  baseman Colin Walsh was awarded with the Jack Shepard Memorial honor, given annually since 1995 in honor of the late All-American catcher from 1951 to 1953. The award, given to the team's top hitter, was given to Walsh, who led the team with a .320 average.
