Vote for Andrew Wiedeman for Soccer News Net's Player of the Year Award

BERKELEY - California junior forward Andrew Wiedeman is one of 34 players on the ballot for Soccer News Net's Player of the Year Award. Fans are encouraged to vote for Wiedeman, the Golden Bears' leading scorer, at the various Web sites on the Soccer News Net network: Big Apple Soccer (, ChicagoLand Soccer News (, LA Soccer News (, New England Soccer News (, Philly Soccer News ( and Dallas Soccer News ( Voting will continue until Dec. 19.

Online fan voting will account for 40 percent of the total toward the award. The remaining 60 percent of the vote will be cast by the editorial staffs of the six Web sites.

The editors of each of the six sites in the Soccer News Net network nominated up to six local players for the award, each of which will be eligible for the regional player of the year award. The nominations included athletes playing at colleges within each site's coverage area, as well as athletes from the area playing collegiately elsewhere in the country. A dozen additional at-large selections rounded out the nominations.

Wiedeman, who was one of the most dangerous attacking players on the West Coast this season, was Cal's leading scorer in 2009. He paced the Bears in points (26), goals (11) and game-winning goals (5) after starting all 18 games. The San Ramon, Calif., product also tied Cosgriff for second on the team with four assists. Wiedeman ended the regular season tied for second in goals and ranked third in points in the Pac-10.

Also strong in the classroom, Wiedeman earned a spot on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America second team after first claiming a berth on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 8 Team. Wiedeman was named to three important preseason award lists - the Watch List for the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy and the preseason All-America teams for Soccer America and College Soccer News.
