Arizona vs. San Diego
November 27, 2009
Arizona Head Coach Niya Butts
“4-1 is definitely better than 3-2, so anytime you can come out with a victory, we’ll take that. I thought we played in spurts tonight, but at times there were some really good moments where I thought we were doing the things defensively that we needed to do, so I think that made the difference.”
On not using the bench as deep as previous games
“This team presented some different matchup problems for us because they had some post players that really liked to get out on the perimeter and really liked to shoot the three, so naturally we wanted to stay with our faster lineup when that happens. I think it was a good team win for us.”
On teamwork of Ify Ibekwe and Soana Lucet
“I think the two of them are getting better every game. I think tonight for Soana it was one of her better games offensively in that she didn’t look as timid as she has so far this year. I think as they play more games, they are going to gel a lot better than they have so far.
On offensive balance
“It helps out a lot because anyone can make plays. Tonight, Davellyn (Whyte) didn’t score as many points, but she certainly was responsible for a lot of them. We’ll take that anytime we can get it.”
Junior forward Ify Ibekwe
On comfort level playing with Soana Lucet
'I think today was the game where we felt like we were feeding off each other. We know where each other are going to be at on the floor. When she makes a mistake or I make a mistake, she knows what to say to me and I know what to say to her to get refocused. '
On slow start
'I don't know why we started so slow, but teams do that. We knew that we did that and we picked ourselves up after that timeout.'
On defensive adjustments
'We started staying down, not gambling and getting the ball and go. We need to be more of a defensive team and I think today was the day that we showed that.'
