AUSTIN, Texas – The Arizona men’s and women’s swimming team’s head to Austin, Texas this week to compete in the Texas Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame Invitational.  Both teams will look to achieve NCAA cut standard times while competing among of the nation’s finest swimmers.

Thus far through the fall dual meet season, the men’s and women’s teams are unbeaten.  They have topped Wisconsin, UNLV, USC and UCLA all at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center while continuing to train to get faster.

Ana Agy and Annie Chandler are the only members to achieve an NCAA cut time so far, but that should change after this weekend.  The coaching staff has the swimmers tapered for the Texas Invite every season so they could earn qualifying times early on.

Some standouts on the men’s team include freshman Carl Mickelson who has times of 55.81 and 2:04.53 in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, respectively. Also Jordan Smith has looked strong in the sprint freestyle events, swimming of 20.42 in the 50 free and 44.92 in the 100 free.

Over on the women’s side, Agy has times of 53.47 and 1:58.32 in the 100 and 200 backstroke.  Jenny Forster leads the women in the individual medley’s with times of 2:05.08 and 4:22.97 over the 200 I.M. and 400 I.M.

Last year, the invitational was highlighted by UA’s Lara Jackson’s American record time in the 50 free of 21.33.  She would later go on to lower that record to 21.27 at the 2009 NCAA Championships.

In addition to individual times, Arizona will focus on its relay standards.  The Wildcats typically put a heavy emphasis on relays and this year will be no different.  UA looks to be especially strong in the medley relays with a plethora of breast and backstroke swimmers.

Other teams competing in Austin this weekend make up some of the top swimming programs in the country.  These include host Texas, Auburn, California, Wisconsin and UCLA among others.
