Kubec Leads Wrestling to Seventh; Four to Compete in Final Day of Cliff Keen

Dec. 4, 2009

Primm, Nev. - Sophomore Kelly Kubec (Lake Stevens, Wash.) is the lone Oregon State wrestler still set to compete tomorrow in the championship bracket at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational at 133 pounds, while the Beavers as a team are currently in seventh place and three others are still alive in the consolation bracket.

Oregon State currently has 61.5 team points, four points behind fourth place 13th-ranked Indiana and 27.5 points behind first place No. 4 Ohio State. The Beavers are the highest unranked team in this year's tournament with the top six ranking in the top 13 in the country. Oregon State is also edging out its conference opponents, leading No. 23 Cal Poly by a pair of points and easily beating the other four competing.

Kubec, seeded seventh, earned bonus points for the Beavers in his first match, chalking up the technical fall over Markus Portillos of CSU-Pueblos, 16-1. Kubec surged ahead for back-to-back decisions over CJ Napier of Nebraska and upsetting second-seeded Kevin Smith of Buffalo, 5-4. Kubec will face third-seeded Mike Grey of Cornell on Saturday in the semifinals.

Freshman RJ Pena (Salem, Ore.), seeded 12th, is the next wrestler still alive with a guaranteed placing at 149. Pena started competition by shutting out Rodney Dollar of Western Wyoming, 6-0, but then fell in the second round to fifth-seeded Jason Chamberlain of Boise State, 6-1, knocking Pena into the consolation bracket. But Pena responded by winning four straight, including a 3:37 fall over Chris Hacker of Nebraska. Pena will face Walter Peppelman of Harvard on Saturday.

After losing his first match at 197 pounds, unseeded sophomore Chad Hanke (Dayton, Ore.) came storming back, earning a pin in 4:12 over Tim Miller of Virginia Tech in the first consolation match. Hanke racked up a pair of decisions and a major decision in the winning streak that will see him competing against Tyler Smith of Rider on Saturday. Hanke is guaranteed to place in the top eight.

Seeded fifth at heavyweight, sophomore Clayton Jack (Vacaville, Calif.) has recorded the most pins for the Beavers with two. Jack advanced to the quarterfinals after earning a pair of decisions and pinning No. 12 Ben Apland of Michigan in 3:42. But No. 4 Nate Everhart of Indiana knocked Jack into the consolation bracket in a 6-3 decision. But Jack rebounded with a fall over No. 11 Eloheim Palma of NC State in 4:39. Jack will face No. 10 Erik Nye of Arizona State on Saturday.

After starting off strong with a pair of wins to reach the championship quarterfinals, ninth-seeded redshirt sophomore Jason Lara (Midway City, Calif.) lost back-to-back matches against No. 1 seeded Angel Escobedo of Indiana and then to Ben Kjar of Utah Valley in a close 5-4 decision, just one match shy of placing. Lara tallied a pair of decisions over Kyle Gilchrist of Columbia and No. 8 seeded Nikko Triggas of Ohio State.

Redshirt freshman Mike Mangrum (Auburn, Wash.), ranked ninth at 141 pounds, had an up and down day, winning his first match over Aaron Nestor of Rider, 5-4, but then falling to eighth-seeded Kenny Hashimoto of Northern Colorado in the second round, 16-12. Mangrum rebounded with a 9-2 decision over Ben Lockett of San Francisco State with a 9-2 decision but was knocked out by Cole Schmitt of Wisconsin in the next round, 10-3.

Senior Keegan Davis (Salem, Ore.), seeded ninth, went 4-2 on the day, earning a pair of wins at 157 pounds in the pigtail and first rounds before falling to the eighth-seeded Bryce Saddoris of Navy in a close 5-3 decision. Davis came back with another two decisions over Matt Dunn of Columbia, 3-2, and Travis Sheehy of UNC Greensboro but was unable to top No. 7 Shane Vernon, who won 7-5.

Sophomore Ryan Smith (Prineville, Ore.) earned a pair of wins over Skye Wells of Western State and Joey Granata of Cal State Bakersfield in the form of a 16-1 technical fall and 4-3 decision. But T Edwards of Arizona State took the next match 3-2 to put Smith out of the tournament.

After a three-match comeback winning streak, junior Colby Covington (Springfield, Ore.) was unable to stop No. 10 David Rella of Ohio State, falling 11-4. Covington earned one of the team's few falls with one over Dave Woodall of Drexel in 2:05, followed by a 14-6 major decision over No. 8 Shane Riccio of Bucknell.

Junior 11th-seeded Brice Arand (Springfield, Ore.) had a tough draw, facing a pair of higher ranked opponents in the championship bracket. Arand quickly earned a first round 6-1 decision over Nick Corpe of Purdue before a 13-7 decision over sixth-seeded Joe Budi of Old Dominion. But the next pair of opponents stopped Arand beginning with No. 3 Joe LeBlanc, who earned a technical fall, followed by a decision by Matt Ryan of West Virginia.

The final day of competition at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday in the Star of the Desert Arena.
