The two schools met four times during a seven-year period from 1978-84, with the Sooners holding a 1-3 advantage in four previous meetings. The Sooners posted a 35-29 victory at Stanford Stadium in 1978 with the Cardinal coming back two years later to score a 31-14 upset victory over fourth-ranked Oklahoma in Norman. The Sooners also posted victories in 1983 (27-14) and 1984 (19-7).
