MAACO Bowl Las Vegas Moment
Dec. 8, 2009
Corvallis, Ore. -
The Beavers were soundly defeated by Pittsburgh in the season finale the year before at the Insight Bowl, head coach Dennis Erickson suddenly departed to the NFL's San Francisco 49ers and Mike Riley was rehired as head coach. There were many unknowns for fans of Oregon State football when the 2003 season began.
The Beavers opened the year with five victories in their first six games, including impressive wins over Boise State, Arizona State and California. The team settled eventually on a 7-5 record heading into the Las Vegas Bowl, including 4-4 in Pac-10 play.
Eight Beavers were returning to their home state to play in the Christmas Eve Day game against the New Mexico Lobos and head coach Rocky Long, the former defensive coordinator under OSU's Jerry Pettibone. The homecoming for guys like Steven Jackson, Richard Seigler, Lawrence Turner and Jonathan Pollard proved to be an impetus for the team as it posted a 55-14 victory. Jackson, immediately after the game, announced that he was entering the NFL Draft and forgoing his senior season.
The victory started the current five-game bowl win streak, all with Coach Riley at the helm.
