Golden Bears Begin Preparations for Poinsettia Bowl

Dec. 11, 2009

BERKELEY - California began its preparations for the Poinsettia Bowl with its first practice since the end of the regular season Friday. Under rainy skies in Memorial Stadium, the Golden Bears went through an hour and 45-minute workout.

Cal head coach Jeff Tedford said Cal will use its first three practices before the bowl to work on fundamentals and give some of the freshmen and sophomores a change to get more reps than they normally would. Only later will the Bears install their specific game plan.

'It's an opportunity to let the young guys get involved in what we're doing,' Tedford said. 'It gives you a glimpse of what's to come in the spring. You look for fundamentals and things like that, to see how they've improved. That's what this is all about.

'It's real important for the young guys,' he added. 'Today was a big fundamental day ... Anytime you can get out there and practice and get better is a great opportunity.'

Cal will remain in Berkeley until leaving for the Poinsettia Bowl Dec. 19. The Bears will face Utah in the fifth annual game Dec. 23 at San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m.

Tickets for the game are available through the Cal Athletics Ticket Office by clicking on the tickets link at or by calling (800) GO BEARS during regular business hours.

The Golden Bears completed the regular season with an 8-4 overall record and will be extending their own school record with a seventh consecutive bowl appearance. Cal has won it last four bowl games, including the 2008 Emerald Bowl when the Bears defeated Miami, 24-17.
