Cardinal Ranked 26th in Pre-season Collegiate Baseball Poll

Dec. 21, 2009

TUCSON, Ariz.-- Returning six starters and two-thirds of its weekend rotation, Stanford Baseball is ranked No. 26 in Collegiate Baseball's pre-season top-40 national poll.

In a rarity for the perennial College World Series program, the Cardinal missed the NCAA Tournament despite a 30-25 record.  It was the 32nd time in Mark Marquess' 33 years that the team has finished at or above .500. In 14 of those seasons, the Cardinal have reached the CWS.

The Cardinal feature six opponents ranked in the pre-season poll, including four in the top-11, paced by top-ranked Texas, No. 5 Arizona State, No. 10 Oregon State and No. 11 Rice. The others are No. 20 UCLA and No. 34 Pepperdine.

A Texas two-step will start the season, as the Cardinal will open up the season February 21 with a  three-game series against the Owls at Sunken Diamond as part of a 33-game home schedule. The next weekend they will be in Austin to take on the top-ranked Longhorns.

The team's home schedule also features No. 34-ranked Pepperdine in mid-March (March 19-21) and No. 5-ranked Arizona State to close out the regular season. Season tickets can be obtained by calling 1-800-STANFORD or by going to www.gostanford.com.

April features two road trips to top-25 opponents. A three-game slant is schedule in Los Angeles to begin the month (April 1-3), while a flight to Corvallis is later that month (April 16-19).

This year's team returns six starters and two-thirds of its weekend rotation, highlighted by second baseman Colin Walsh (.320) and outfielder Kellen Kiilsgaard (.313). Sophomores Brett Mooneyham (6-3, 4.14) and Jordan Pries (4-4, 4.62) anchor the rotation. This year's recruiting class was rated No. 2 by Baseball America and features infielders Kenny Diekroeger and Stephen Piscotty and outfielder Jacob Stewart.

The Cardinal have reached 25 NCAA Regionals in Marquess' tenure, which has included two national titles, 14 trips to the College World Series, 15 NCAA Regional crowns and 12 Pac-10 Championships.
