Dec. 21, 2009
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Commissioner Larry Scott announced today that USC junior forward Alex Stepheson has been named the Pac-10 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 14-20.
Stepheson led the Trojans to a 77-55 upset victory over No. 9 Tennessee, marking the Pac-10’s first win over a ranked team in the 2009-10 season. Stepheson posted his third-consecutive double-double and fourth overall with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Setting the tone early, he pulled down nine boards in the first half, two more than the entire Volunteers team. Playing the entire 40 minutes for the first time in his career, the Los Angeles, Calif., native posted his second-straight 8-for-11 (72.7 percent) effort from the field.
Through seven games this season, Stepheson ranks second in the Conference in rebounds (10.6 boards per contest), first in blocked shots 17 (2.57 per outing) and offensive rebounds (4.29 per game). He also is averaging 13.4 points per game.
This is the first weekly honor for Stepheson and USC’s 30th all-time Player of the Week.
Also Nominated: Jeremy Jacob, ORE; Landry Fields, STAN; Malcolm Lee, UCLA; Isaiah Thomas, WASH; Nikola Koprivica, WSU
