Markel Walker Named UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week

Freshman forward Markel Walker (Philadelphia, PA/Schenley HS) of the UCLA women's basketball team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Dec. 28-Jan. 3.
Walker had a pair of 20-point games and led UCLA to three wins last week, including a 74-56 upset victory on the road against 17th-ranked Arizona State. In a 73-52 home win over LMU at the start of the week, she led all players with a game-high and then-career-best 20 points to go along with eight rebounds and three steals. On Friday at Arizona, she scored the go-ahead basket in the second half, a three-pointer that capped off a 10-2 run that put UCLA ahead for good, 44-43. The Bruins won the game by a 67-58 margin. Walker scored seven of her eight points in the second half as UCLA overcame a 28-23 halftime deficit. In the win at Arizona State, Walker scored a career-best and game-high 24 points, including seven points during a 14-4 run that closed the first half with UCLA holding a 37-20 lead. After Arizona State closed to 55-41 in the second half with a 7-0 run, Walker scored five of UCLA's points in a 7-2 run which helped close out the Sun Devils.
This is Walker's first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and of her career.
