Jan. 5, 2010
CORVALLIS - Oregon State head coach Mike Riley has announced that student-athletes Kevin Cummings, Michael Doctor and Obum (oh-BOOM) Gwacham (Watch-em) have been admitted and started classes Tuesday. All three players signed national letters of intent last February and delayed enrollment, essentially becoming greyshirts. They all will have five years of eligibility to play four seasons.
Cummings, from Culver City, Calif., played for USA Football's 2009 Junior National Team last summer earning a gold medal. The 6-foot, 171-pound wide receiver caught a touchdown pass in the championship game. He was a Rivals.com and Scout.com three-star athlete and is a former high school teammate of current Beavers Ryan Katz and Cameron Collins. He collected 25 receptions, 520 yards and four touchdowns as a senior at Crespi High School. He also lettered as a sprinter for the track team.
Doctor, a 5-foot-11, 203-pound linebacker, was rated as the 21st best outside linebacker prospect in the nation by Rivals.com. A native of Tulsa, Okla., Doctor tallied 340 career tackles, including 130 as a senior. In addition, he rushed for 1,299 yards as a running back in 2008 and led the state 5A ranks with 28 touchdowns, including two on punt returns. He rushed for 106 yards and posted 16 tackles in the state title game helping Booker T. Washington High School to its first state title since 1984.
Gwacham is a 6-foot-5, 207-pound athlete from Chino Hills, Calif. where he was a two-year letterwinner at wide receiver and earned four in track and field. Born in Nigeria, he moved to the U.S. when he was seven and excels in the high jump, triple jump and long jump. Rivals.com rated him as one of the '50 players to watch in the Southern Section' prior to the 2008 season and earned second team All-Sierra League as a senior.
The 2010 national letter of intent period for high school seniors begins Feb. 3.
