Three Cardinal Called Up to U-20 National Teams

Jan. 11, 2010

STANFORD, Calif. - Three Stanford players have been named by their national teams to play in the CONCACAF Women's Under-20 Championship in Guatemala this month, with a berth in the U-20 Women's World Cup in the balance.

Sophomore midfielder Teresa Noyola and freshman defender Rachel Quon were named to the United States squad, and freshman defender Alina Garciamendez was named to Mexico's team.

The eight-team tournament takes place Jan. 19-30 at the 17,000-seat Estadio Cementos Progreso in Guatemala City. Three teams will advance to the World Cup in Germany July 13-Aug. 1.

The format calls for two groups of four, with the top two finishers in each advancing to the semifinals. The U.S. and Mexico are in the same group, meaning the Stanford teammates will face each other Jan. 25 in their final Group B match.

Noyola and Quon made the 20-player U.S. roster after a week-long training camp in Gainesville, Fla., and were named to the squad by coach Jillian Ellis, UCLA's head coach.

Garciamendez recently earned her first full national team caps for Mexico, leaving immediately after Stanford's NCAA College Cup semifinal loss (Dec. 6) in College Station, Texas, for Brazil, where she participated in an international tournament.
