GymDawgs Ranked No. 19 Nationally After Opening Weekend

SEATTLE - As evidence that they are not only an up-and-coming team nationally but that they also will face one of the nation's toughest schedules, the Washington gymnastics team came in at No. 19 in the rankings released Monday based on team scores over the weekend, while several of their opponents are in the top-10.
UW's opponent this Friday, UCLA, earned the top score in the country over the opening weekend (196.600) while the Huskies' opening opponent, Nebraska, came in at No. 3 (195.700). On top of those two teams, the Huskies will also face the current No. 2 (Oklahoma), No. 5 (Oregon State), No. 7 (Arkansas), No. 11 (Utah), No. 12 (Stanford) and No. 24 (San Jose State) teams during the 2010 season.
The Huskies were led by junior Samantha Walior and sophomore Hatsune Akaogi last weekend, with Walior currently ranked tied for 14th in the nation after her 9.850 on floor, which was the fourth-highest score in the country on opening weekend. Akaogi, meanwhile, ranks tied for 21st in the country in all-around as her 38.950 was the 13th-best in Division I.
The GymDawgs had their best showing Friday on floor exercise, an event which they rank tied for 13th in the country on after posting a combined 48.850 score. They also rank No. 14 on beam after a solid 48.475 on the most difficult apparatus. Additionally, they rank second in the West Region in beam and fourth in floor exercise and team total. Akaogi ranks fifth in the West Region in the all-around, while Walior is tied for third on floor.
The Huskies will host No. 1 UCLA on Friday at 7 p.m. at Bank of America Arena.
