WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – Arizona sophomore gymnast Britnie Jones has been recognized by the Pacific-10 Conference for the Special Performance of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Jones led the Wildcats with an impressive season debut on the balance beam, earning a 9.85 to earn a share of the individual title in the event. The performance came on the heels of a two-month recovery from a stress fracture that sidelined her leading up to the start of the season.
“It was amazing to see Britnie go out and perform so well this meet after her injury,” Arizona head coach Bill Ryden said following the meet. “It really speaks to her potential for this season.”
Despite Jones’ performance, the then-No. 20 Wildcats dropped their season opener at No. 8 Arkansas last Friday, 195.5-192.65. However, UA coaches were pleased with the road performance considering limitations due to several recent injuries.
“We had a lot of new routines on every event, and we have a lot of work to do from this point forward.” Coach Ryden said following the meet. “It was a good learning experience, and I’m not disappointed with our performance.”
In the meet, Jones also turned in a 9.775 on the uneven bars, a mark that matched Sarah Tomczyk for the Wildcats’ top score in the event.
The Wildcats look to improve this coming weekend as they travel to Palo Alto, Calif., to take on No. 12 Stanford in the first conference meet of the season. Arizona remains on the road for a contest at Arizona State on January 24 before hosting the home-opener on January 29 against California.
