Three Bears Receive Campbell/ITA Preseason Singles Rankings

BERKELEY - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released its preseason rankings on Tuesday, Jan. 5, with three California men's tennis players receiving first-time singles rankings. Junior Jonathan Dahan topped all Golden Bears with the No. 33 spot. Junior Bozhidar Katsarov checked in at No. 98 with freshman Christoffer Konigsfeldt making the list at No. 106. USC sophomore Steve Johnson received the top singles ranking. Cal also had two doubles team combinations receive preseason rankings; sophomores Nick Andrews and Sky Lovill combined to tie with nine other pairs for the No. 39 ranking while Andrews and Konigsfeldt team up to hold the No. 49 spot.
As a team, the Bears were among six out of seven Pac-10 teams to receive rankings in the preseason poll. Cal will begin the year where it ended 2009 with the No. 40 ranking. Defending NCAA champion USC returns to defend its crown armed with the preseason No. 1 ranking. No. 5 UCLA and No. 10 Stanford also crack the top 10 with No. 24 Arizona and No. 26 Washington in the mix to give the Pac-10 six teams in the top 40. Only Oregon remains unranked.
Cal will open the 2010 dual season with a bout against No. 68 SMU at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. The Bears and the Mustangs will take the court at 2 p.m. CT on Saturday, Jan. 16. Cal will remain in Oklahoma to face host No. 34 Tulsa in a 1 p.m. CT match on Sunday, Jan. 17, before returning home to host Santa Clara in a 2 p.m. PT match at the Hellman Tennis Complex on Tuesday, Jan. 26.
The Bears opened 2009 with the No. 25 ranking and finished at No. 40 after posting an 11-11 overall record (2-4 Pac-10, fifth) to receive their school-record 10th consecutive bid to the NCAA championship tournament.
