Track & Field Opens Season with WSU Open Indoor Meet

COUGARS READY TO RUN, JUMP AND THROW AT OPENER: Washington State University's indoor track and field teams open the 2010 indoor season with the Eighth Annual WSU Indoor Open...WSU Indoor Facility's Mondo track features racing at 60m, 200m, 400m, mile, 800m and 3000m with 60m hurdles as well as a co-ed 4x400m relay...jumping and throwing field events will be contested on the turf inside the oval...men's 35-pound and women's 20-pound weight throws take place Friday, Jan. 15, at 4 p.m...remaining field events will begin Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with running events set to start at 10 a.m...complete results will be posted at www.wsucougars.com, following the meet's completion.
WANT TO COMPETE? OR JUST WATCH: All competitors are to register online no later than noon, Jan. 13 at www.DirectAthletics.com for a $10 entry fee...late entries will be charged an additional $10 for signing up the day of the meet...spectators are admitted free of charge for all WSU Track & Field competition in 2010...parking will be limited close to the IPF due to the WSU men's basketball game Jan. 16.
COUGAR INDOOR INVITATIONAL ON TAP: The Cougar Indoor Invitational meet will take place Jan. 22-23 in the IPF...teams from Idaho, Eastern Washington, Utah State, Montana, Whitman and Community Colleges of Spokane will join Washington State in the two-day meet that includes a men's heptathlon and women' pentathlon.
ABOUT THE COUGAR COACHES: Head coach Rick Sloan is in his 37th season with the Cougar track program; 16th year as a head coach, 15th year as mentor to the combined men's and women's program...Sloan (decathlon/heptathlon) is joined by associate coach Debra Farwell (throws), and assistant coaches Pete Julian (cross country/distance), Mark Macdonald (hurdles/relays), Ellannee Richardson (sprints/relays) and Matt McGee (jumps)...volunteer coaches include Megan Johnson (throws), Elliott Hubler (jumps), and Tim Riley (distance).
NCAA DESCENDING ORDER LISTS: The NCAA has qualifying provisional and automatic qualifying standards for Indoor competition that can be found on the 2010 Indoor Bests Lists posted on the WSU website (www.wsucougars.com)...national descending order lists can be viewed at the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Track & Field Results Reporting System website (www.tfrrs.org).
COUGAR WSU OPEN INDOOR 2009 CHAMPIONS: Three WSU women and five Cougar men who won events at the 2009 WSU Open are members of the Cougar 2010 team...women's winners include: Brianne Brown (400m), Anna Layman (800m), Amanda Stewart (high jump)...men's winners were: Marlon Murray (60m dash), Joe Abbott (400m), David Hickerson (800m), Justin England (mile), and Trent Arrivey (high jump).
COUGARS AND THE MPSF INDOOR HISTORY: Because the Pacific-10 Conference does not sponsor indoor track and field competition, Washington State University competes in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation for an indoor track conference title, joining teams from the Pac-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic, West Coast and Big West Conferences...at the 2009 MPSF Indoor Championships, the women's team finish order was: 1. Stanford (115), 2. Oregon (91.5), 3. Arizona State (78), 4. UCLA (75.5), 5. Washington (72.5), 6. California (68.5), 7. Arizona (62), 8. Washington State (51.5), 9. Cal State Northridge (32.5), and 10. Long Beach State (14)...placing for the men's teams were: 1. UCLA (83.5), 2. Washington State (78.5) and California (78.5), 4. Oregon (78), 5. Arizona State (76.5), 6. Washington (75), 7. Stanford (68), 8. Cal St. Northridge (56), 9. Arizona (54), and 10. Long Beach State (14)...2010 MPSF Championships are slated for February 26-27, at Washington's Dempsey Indoor Facility.
2009 NCAA INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS COMPETITORS: WSU produced five All-Americans from the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championship meet...Trent Arrivey (8th, high jump), 4x400m Relay (8th) - Barry Leavitt (graduated), Reny Follett, Justin Woods (graduated), and Jeshua Anderson...WSU men's team score was two points (t-53rd).
