On The Road With Women's Hoops

Jan. 13, 2010

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Oregon State women's basketball team is making its first Pacific-10 Conference trip of the season, and the Beavers are in Tucson to open the weekend. Wednesday was the team's travel day, with OSU starting the day off with a practice at Gill Coliseum. From there, it was to the team bus for a ride to the airport and a 3:15 departure to Phoenix on U.S. Airways. The only catch with a trip to Tucson is that to get there, you can't fly direct from Portland.

So, after landing in Phoenix, the Beavers had a 30-minute layover before boarding a regional jet to get to Tucson. Sounds pretty much like a basic road trip at that point, right? But the flight to Tucson is a mere 22 minutes from wheels up to landing. It has to be one of the shortest flights on the West Coast. It literally seems that as soon as the captain announces that the flight is leveling off at 17,000 feet they're ready to descend. Fortunately for the Beavers, both flights were relatively smooth turbulence-wise, outside of a bit of a bumpy climb out of the Portland as the city was encased in low level clouds today.

The team is certainly used to traveling, especially with nearly weeklong trips to Houston and Flagstaff, Ariz., to start the year. For the players, flying is a chance to get some homework done. Some players will get their laptops out and write a paper, while others pull out their textbooks and get some reading done. For the support staff, it's an opportunity to catch up on some work or dig into a good book. The flight to Phoenix is about two hours, so there's a great chance to make a dent in a book. Stacey Nichols and Talisa Rhea were 'jamming' to some music - the tunes were unknown of course - part of the way to Phoenix and then as they were getting off the plane. The picture from the front of the Web site is of a few of the Beavers waiting in the luggage area at the Tucson Airport waiting to get their bags. It's been in the low 70s all week here in Arizona, and it felt cool and comfortable upon landing.

After arriving in Tucson at 8:15 Arizona time, the team headed to a late dinner of corn, baked potato bar, chicken, Fettucine Alfredo and some other assorted healthy items before heading off to their rooms for some quick relaxation and then bed time. The team will be up early tomorrow for breakfast and then a shootaround before taking on Arizona at the McKale Center.

Check back on osubeavers.com during the trip to learn more about what the Beavers will be doing on their trip to play Arizona and Arizona State. We'll have a Q&A with sophomore Kassandra McCalister, so keep an eye out for that, and of course, check the Web site for live stats of Thursday night's game as well as a full game recap and box score after the game's completion.

Go Beavs!
