Jan. 14, 2010
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Danielle Orsillo scored 17 points and Arizona State held the Pac-10's highest scoring team to its second-lowest point total of the year in a 73-68 win over Oregon Thursday night.
Micaela Cocks scored 15 points for Oregon, which came into the game scoring 87 points a game and had scored less than 78 points only once all season under first-year coach Paul Westhead, who has used a run-and-gun style as a men's and women's collegiate and professional coach over his three decades in the game.
Taylor Lilley added 14 points and three steals for the Ducks (12-4, 3-1) who had won four of the last five and hadn't scored less than 78 points since the 58-57 loss to Wisconsin on Nov. 28.
Becca Tobin added 10 of her 12 points in the second half as the Sun Devils (10-6, 2-3) began to break the Oregon full-court press and took advantage of a pair of Oregon turnovers to run off seven straight points and break a 37-37 tie early in the second half. An Orsillo jumper gave Arizona State a 55-41 lead with 9:11 left.
In the first 10 minutes of the second half Oregon was 1-of-8 from inside the arc but had made all three of its 3-pointers to stay close.
The Ducks got within 70-68 with 15 seconds left on Amanda Johnson's layup but Kayli Murphy, who scored all of her 11 points from the line, made two free throws three seconds later to help secure the win.
