Men's Track & Field Staff To Take Part In LA84 Foundation Clinic
Jan. 15, 2010
Track & field coaches Mike Maynard, LaMonte Vaughn, Johnny Gray and Forest Braden will take part in a clinic for the LA84 Foundation on Saturday, January 23. The coaches will be speaking on their event groups and various aspects of training and technique.
The LA84 Foundation is endowed with surplus funds from the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Their mission is to serve youth through sport and to increase knowledge of sport and its impact on people's lives. The LA84 Foundation supports a wide array of youth sports programming. They award grants to youth sports organizations within the eight southernmost counties of California. They also conduct their own youth sports and coaching education programs, a number of which have become models for similar programs nationwide
The LA84 Foundation operates the largest sports research library in North America, the Paul Ziffren Sports Resource Center. It is a state-of-the-art research facility and learning center dedicated to the advancement of sports knowledge and scholarship. The Foundation also maintains a sizable collection of historic sport art and artifacts much of which was inherited from the former Helms Athletic Foundation Sports Halls of Fame.
The LA84 Foundation is a private nonprofit institution. The Foundation has committed more than $185 million to accomplish its mission since 1985. To date, two million boys and girls, and more than 1,000 youth sports organizations throughout Southern California have benefited from the endowment. They will be joined by many more in the years ahead.
The Foundation's Track & Field Coaching Education program was created in 1991. Since that time almost 20,000 coaches have attended one of our clinics, which focus on helping the high school and youth coach to develop a full Track & Field program that not only can guide the elite athletes to reach their highest aspirations but also provide a place for all youngsters to enjoy, appreciate and fully participate in the sport.
The cornerstone of the education program is the 457 page LA84Foundation Track & Field Coaching manual, which is considered to be the most comprehensive and complete Track & Field coaching manual in the country geared toward the high school coach.
The manual not only covers all events in the sport with sections written by some of the most successful and respected high school and college coaches in the nation but it also covers the areas of ethics, recruiting, health, and the art of coaching.
