Perez Selected In Women's Pro Soccer League Draft
Jan. 15, 2010
SEATTLE - The Saint Louis Athletica of the Women's Pro Soccer (WPS) league selected recent UW graduate Veronica Perez in the fourth round of the 2010 draft Friday morning.
Perez, a San Mateo, Calif., native joins fellow former Huskies Hope Solo and Tina Ellertson on the Saint Louis franchise, which finished with the second-best regular season record in the league's inaugural season.
Perez, who was the eighth pick of the fourth round and the 37th pick overall, was a two-time All-Pac-10 and two-time All-West Region selection for the Huskies, leaving her mark on the UW program with several top-10 all time numbers. She ranks third all-time in shots (194) and games played (83), fourth in game-winning goals (8), tied for sixth in goals (21) and eighth in points (53). She also appears in the single-season charts, with her 13 goals and six game-winners in 2008 both ranking third while her 31 points rank fifth. Perez has already spent time with both the Mexican National Team and the U-23 USA National Team recently, giving her international experience that will be invaluable at the professional level.
'We are thrilled for `V'. She's earned the opportunity and she's going to make a great professional player,' Washington head coach Lesle Gallimore said. 'The combination of her being with two other Huskies - which we didn't expect to happen - and the Saint Louis coach being the Brazilian national team coach are perfect. Veronica's style of play suits that type of coaching. I know she's excited to get to work. She's earned the opportunity to be on a roster and she'll put as much work as she did into her career at Washington to be the best professional she can be. We couldn't be more thrilled and it couldn't happen to a better kid.'
Perez was the seventh Pac-10 player selected, as the conference had nine players chosen overall. The Athletica also chose a Pac-10 player ahead of Perez as their first selection was UCLA's Kristina Larsen with the 17th overall pick. They also picked North Carolina goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris with the 19th pick and Santa Clara's Amanda Poach with the 28th pick before selecting Perez.
The second WPS season begins in mid-April with the Athletica's home opener scheduled for April 11 in Fenton, Mo., against FC Gold Pride. The full schedule will be announced in mid-February. For more information on the WPS, click here and for more info on the Saint Louis Athletica, click here
