Two Pac-10 Women's Basketball Players Named to the Midseason List for the Women's John R. Wooden Award
Jan. 15, 2010
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.- The Los Angeles Athletic Club’s John R. Wooden Committee named the top 21 candidates for the nation’s most coveted college basketball honor, the John R. Wooden award earlier this week and STANFORD’s Jayne Appel and Kayla Pedersen were among those named to the list.
The Wooden Award is given to the nation’s best women’s basketball player at an institution of higher education who has proven she is making progress toward graduation and maintains a cumulative 2.0 GPA. The midseason list has 21 players instead of 20 because of a tie in voting and candidates are named on individual excellence and team record during the first half of the season.
Appel, a senior center from Pleasant Hill, Calif., was a finalist for the 2009 Wooden Award and is averaging 13.2 points and 9.4 rebounds per game on the season, while shooting 50.7 percent from the field. She currently leads all active Pac-10 players with 1,833 points and 1,083 rebounds in her career.
Teammate Pedersen, a junior forward out of Fountain Hills, Ariz., was also named to the midseason list. Pedersen is having a strong junior campaign, averaging 17.3 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, while shooting 46.7 percent from the field and 37.7 percent from behind the arc. Pedersen’s 17.4 points per game is good for second most in the Conference.
Both Appel and Pedersen have carried the No. 2 Cardinal to a 14-1 season so far, including wins over three ranked opponents, with its only loss coming to top-ranked Connecticut in Hartford, Conn.
In March, the National Ballot for the Women’s Wooden award, consisting of approximately 15 top players, will be announced and the week of the “Elite Eight” round of the NCAA Tournament the Women’s Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced. The 34th annual Wooden Award ceremony, where the Women’s Wooden Award winner will be named, is set to take place the weekend of April 9-11, 2010.
