Men's Tennis Stings Mustangs with 7-0 Sweep

TULSA, Okla. - California men's tennis sophomore Nick Andrews earned a 9-7 tiebreaker win in the second set of his match against Gerardo Armendariz to give the Golden Bears (1-0) their fourth point of the day and to seal Cal's first dual victory of 2010. The Bears completed the match with a 7-0 sweep of No. 68 Southern Methodist (1-2) as Cal earned eight total wins at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Saturday, Jan. 16.

The Bears came out of the gate swinging as junior duo Jonathan Dahan and Pedro Zerbini made short work of David Costa and Bryan Griffin at the top doubles court to log an 8-1 win. Cal's No. 49-ranked tandem of Andrews and freshman Christoffer Kongsfeldt put up a strong fight at No. 2 doubles but were denied a victory in the end as Adham el-Effendi and Darren Walsh edged the Bears with a 9-7 win. Cal would not be denied the first point of the day as junior Bozhidar Katsarov and freshman Riki McLachlan teamed up for an 8-6 win against Artem Baradach and Chris Hooshyar at court three to seal the doubles point.

At court three singles, No. 33-ranked Dahan blasted through Griffin in a 6-0, 6-0 win to give the Bears a 2-0 lead in the match. Then, No. 106-ranked Konigsfeldt came up with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Costa at court two to put Cal on the verge of winning the match. Andrews' victory came next at No. 5 singles to seal the team victory. No. 98-ranked Katsarov fought back after dropping his first set at court four and defeated Walsh, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, to push the Bears' lead to 5-0.

Junior Pedro Zerbini also came back after losing his first set to claim a win in the third-set tiebreaker, 10-3, as he took out No. 71-ranked Baradach, 3-6, 6-1, 1-0, for Cal's sixth point of the day. McLachlan got a 6-4 win over el-Effendi at court six before dropping his second set, 6-3. McLachlan stood fast and pulled out a 10-8 win in the third-set tiebreaker to give the Bears a 7-0 win.
